Japanese photographer Shogo Yamada continues his “A Record of Someone, Somewhere” series with part three, featuring photographs shot twenty-five years ago in the Leh Ladakh region near Tibet in the Himalayas.

Aged 20, Yamada arrived in the region with little English to rely on for communication. After suffering from altitude sickness for the first week (Leh Ladakh is located at an altitude of about 3,400 meters), he began to photograph the region’s people, their lives, their cities, their traditions, their connection with life. The photographs, released about a quarter century later, reveal Yamada’s deep passion and interest in other people, in getting to know their perspective. His black-and-white photography seeks out reality but does not shy away from mystique and dares to admit to gaps in understanding.
