“I wish I could hear the rustle of all that lies unspoken.
But perhaps those truths are meant to remain unseen.
Maybe they dwell quietly in the dark,
like seeds hidden beneath the soil,
waiting patiently for the rain, quietly preparing for new life.”
― Masako Kakizaki’s afterword
At some point through Masako Kakizaki’s “The First Resonance,” the realization sets in that these landscapes have perhaps never before been looked at quite as patiently and intently as in these photographs. Kakizaki, who previously focused on landscapes in Aomori in the north of Japan, has expanded the scope of her photography beyond the borders of her home prefecture, capturing trees, plants, forests, steppes, rock formations, and other natural features as if listening and responding to primordial sounds. In her photographs, captured neither in fragments nor in totality and maintaining a balanced distance that is neither too close nor too far, the landscapes do not appear passive or quiet but present a steady, persistent sense of presence.
