Last October, Sophie Calle published her Catalogue Raisonné of the Unfinished (Actes Sud), a presentation of all her unfinished or abandoned projects, explaining why they never came to fruition. Each entry ends with a red stamp—ironic and documentary—summarizing the main reason for their abandonment: “no time,” “technical incident,” “expiration,” etc. [...]
In the book's introduction, Sophie Calle quotes Pablo Picasso: “I have a horror of the finished. Death is final. The gunshot finishes it off. The almost finished is life.” The unfinished is an aesthetic in itself. But from her unfinished works, Sophie Calle has created a body of work in itself. Works that will never exist, yet already do!
