Chieko Shiraishi is a photographer whose work focuses on the primal landscapes of everyday memories.
Her signature work, “SHIMAKAGE (Island Shadow),” is a series of monochrome prints featuring island and seaside landscapes from around Japan. This latest portfolio marks the second installment, following the highly acclaimed 2023 edition.
Created using a technique that manually adjusts the tonal balance directly on photographic paper, the works have a fairly dark tone, making it difficult to distinguish between day and night, the present or a generation ago. The images stand as faint silhouettes against a hazy background.
