Harry Gruyaert
1941年生於比利時安特衛普，從電影製作與攝影學系出身的Harry Gruyaert，畢業後移居巴黎，初期在荷蘭語電視台中擔任了攝影總監並參與了幾支影片的拍攝。1968年Harry Gruyaert首次造訪紐約，接觸了紅極一時的普普藝術、安迪沃荷以及在「工廠」內的藝術家。從未映入眼簾的流行藝術對他造成前所未有的衝擊，每日所及的物件在此有了新觀點：平庸的事物仍有其美妙的姿態。
彼時的歐洲攝影，仍是以人文式的黑白攝影當道，影像圍繞於人們與故事身上。著重事件的當下，而非平凡的景觀。一旦提及色彩，更是譁眾取寵的代名詞，不過是商業攝影與廣告中為了刺激消費的糖衣 —— 即使William Eggleston以及Stephen Shore在美國已掀起彩色攝影的大波。
