Mo Yi (b. 1958) is one of China's most important photographic artists, yet remains virtually unknown in the west. A restless innovator of practice and form, he has combined documentary photography of daily life in China's cities with the experimental and performative aspects for which his work has become renowned.

This is his first retrospective. Photographs created through an era of great social, economic and cultural upheaval in China mark the milestones of his journey as an artist, while texts by Holly Roussell, Christoph Wiesner and Philip Tinari locate his work within the evolution of contemporary art during China's reform and opening.

Published to coincide with Mo Yi's major exhibition at the UCCA Center For Contemporary Art and Les Rencontres d'Arles Photography Fesitval.
