The 18th issue of the Osaka-based street photography magazine “Vacuum” opens with a series by Shunji Dodo. The series was photographed in the Nishinari, Tobita, and Sannocho neighborhoods of Osaka between 1980 and 1990. According to Dodo, it was a time of anxiety and chaos marked by the emergence of the AIDS crisis. This issue also features work by regular contributors Ryosuke Koshino, Takuya Suzuki, Yuko Hirano, Kotone Taniguchi, Shogo Yamada, Yuka Matsushita, Ryohji Tsuchiya, Jun Abe, and Mei Hirano.

“Vacuum” is fully dedicated to the art of street photography, with nearly every page filled with edge-to-edge black-and-white images. Since the very first issue, “Vacuum” grants each participating photographer the freedom to present their own series with no set themes or prescribed subjects. Mostly text-free until now, this 18th issue introduces a two-page section in the back where each photographer provides a short statement about their work (in Japanese only).
