Photographer SATO Shintaro captures the accumulated historical layers and human activities within cities through his lens, exploring the unique atmosphere inherent to a place – the genius loci.
This book encompasses eight series spanning SATO's entire career, from 1990 to his latest work in 2025.

It includes works such as “Tokyo Twilight Zone” (The Photographic Society of Japan Awards: Newcomers Award 2009), in which he photographed Tokyo from emergency staircases — a viewpoint between the
pedestrian and from the sky at dusk. “Risen in the East” (Tadahiko Hayashi Award 2012), which documented the construction of Tokyo Skytree from multiple vantage points. Alongside unpublished works such as “Flat City” (1990), created while Sato was a student at photography
school; “Streetscapes” (1999-2002), which captures the urban landscape in bright sunlight; and the latest work “Boundaries” (2019-), appearing for the first time.

SATO's work has freely evolved from straight photography to digital collage, employing the latest techniques of each era while selecting the optimal methodology for each subject and theme. In an essay written for this photobook, photography critic UENO Osamu describes SATO's practice as that of a “Artisan”.

Moving between day and night, the figurative and the abstract, the visible and the invisible, SATO has pursued the City Portraits for thirty-five years.
