Tokio Ito is a photographer born in Tokyo in 1956. After graduating from the Photography Technology Department of Tokyo Polytechnic University Junior College in 1977, he worked as an assistant at the Ikko Narahara Photography Office. He became independent in 1981 and moved to New York in 1985, just before turning 30.
This work is a monochrome series of “Fragments” - scenes he encountered on the streets during his ten-year stay in New York from 1985 to 1995.
Geometric patterns formed by construction cones and caution tape, tablecloths and glasses glimpsed through show-windows, the manhole covers and the recurrence of dogs, the contrast of light and shadow on abandoned chairs—and the occasional human figures are also recorded as objects appearing on the street.
Set against the backdrop of New York City, a place where everything is in constant flux, Ito's eye of an outsider captures the fleeting encounters between people and objects on the street, along with the gorgeous yet strange scenes woven by light and shadow, expressed in classical monochrome.
This book includes an essay recounting an encounter with Robert Frank and a critic by photography critic Kotaro Iizawa titled “Whereabouts of Fragment.”
