Photographer Yehlin Lee has long focused on the boundary between tangible reality and the intangible spirit. In his photobook Undercurrent, he turns his lens to the Zengwen River basin in southern Taiwan, tracing the fading yet still pulsating spiritual remnants of local folk beliefs within everyday life. The frequent shifting of the Zengwen River's course in the past resembles both historical and existential trauma; through his imagery, Lee documents the process by which people attempt to soothe collective memory through sacred rituals.
Diverging from traditional documentary approaches, Undercurrent breaks away from conventional narrative logic. Suspending his subjective will, Lee chooses to gaze at the world with absolute purity, allowing decaying landscapes, everyday objects, and the bodies of devotees to speak for themselves. Within these seemingly fragmented images, madness and tranquility miraculously intertwine. He guides the viewer to dive beneath the surface of the images, discovering within the fissures of material forms the resilient and gentle inner strength of the Taiwanese people in the face of life's impermanence.
Yehlin Lee was born in 1976 in Taipei, Since 2001, he has immersed himself in sound art, exploring humanistic soundscapes, electronic original sounds, and musique concrète. In 2011, Lee expanded his creative horizons to photography, becoming self-taught and deeply committed to the medium. He views listening, yoga, and photography as interconnected disciplines of inner awareness, each one fostering a fresh perception of the present moment.
He views photography as "automatic writing that resonates visually with the external world": in continuous movement and perception, transforming the photographic act from simple documentation of phenomena into a personal ritual that summons the subconscious. Images thus become traces of the invisible world manifesting itself.
