In late 2011, Japanese photographer Akiko Sudo visited Aomori, located in northern Japan. She returned intermittently throughout the winter until January 2025 to walk across and photograph the prefecture’s landscapes. Her photographs of snow-buried villages, snow-flattened landscapes, and life persisting in spite of winter convey a comforting sense of warmth, as if the visually simplified winter scenes also invite a gentler, more grounded way of life. Yet, Sudo’s photographs also convey a layered complexity that unfolds throughout her series. The title of her book, “Nanayuki,” written with the characters for "seven" and "snow," aptly hints at the different types of snow that have fallen in Aomori for centuries.
