The vital spark of horses, immortalized in oil on canvas.

The majesty of Japanese racing legends Sunday Silence, Deep Impact, and Equinox; the gallantry of the British Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment; the tender love between mare and foal—all shine forth in these portraits by equine oil painter Tomoyuki Nagase. Trained under authoritative masters of the genre in Britain and the United States, he adheres to the longstanding tradition of limning his subjects in classic standing profile so as to accentuate their dignity and lofty beauty. This collection, his first, commemorates the thirtieth anniversary of his career.

Horses featured
Heart’s Cry, Sodashi, Justin Palace, Orfevre, Clorinda, Sunday Silence, Tony Bin, Northern Taste, Black Tide, Symboli Rudolf, Shinzan, Deep Impact, Sadler’s Wells, Secretariat, Lys Gracieux, Chrono Genesis, Gran Alegria, Reframe, Loves Only You, Taiki Mystery, Tokai Mystery, Lord Kanaloa, Kitasan Black, Almond Eye, King Kamehameha, Contrail, Equinox

Tomoyuki Nagase was born in 1961 and attended Doshisha University, where he was part of the rugby team that won three Japanese University Championships in a row for the first time in history. After a period as an illustrator, he turned to equine art and today produces oil paintings mostly of racehorses. His activities—including his work with the British Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and black horses, two of his lifelong themes—range far and wide both in Japan and abroad.
