A New River Flows brings together Ai Iwane’s more than twenty-year exploration of the relationshipsbetween people and nature, land and memory, and life and death within a newly conceived photobook.
Rather than functioning as a retrospective, the book reconstructs two independent bodies of work into a new narrative, allowing them to illuminate one another through the structure of the book itself. For the first time, Iwane’s 2020 photobook A New River is brought together with My Cherry, previously presented as a moving-image work, while newly made photographs are woven throughout the sequence. Through this reconfiguration, the two series cease to exist as separate projects and instead unfold as a single, continuous journey in which personal memory, collective history, and the rhythms of nature become inseparable.
Set in the landscapes of Fukushima following the Great East Japan Earthquake, the book is not primarily concerned with the disaster itself. Living alongside land that is gradually returning to nature, Iwane confronts the memory of her younger sister, who died by suicide.
This deeply personal experience of loss quietly resonates with the memories embedded in the
landscape and the lives of those who continue to inhabit it, opening an intimate story toward a shared human experience of remembrance.
Within Iwane’s photographs, documentary and imagination, record and myth, reality and the invisible coexist without contradiction. Rivers, cherry blossoms, forests, light, fireworks, and traces of human presence move fluidly across the pages, dissolving the boundaries between the living and the dead, the past and the present, humanity and nature. Rather than presenting these as fixed oppositions, the photographs suggest that memory itself is constantly flowing, reshaping the relationships between people, history, and the landscapes they inhabit.
Rather than presenting photography simply as a record of events, A New River Flows proposes it as a medium through which memory can be awakened, time layered, and loss embraced.
By transforming an intensely personal narrative into a collective memory, the book quietly expands the possibilities of the photobook itself.
