In recent years, Japanese photography has drawn unprecedented international attention. Yet the contributions of women photographers have long remained underrepresented in accounts of its history. In the summer of 2024, an important step toward redressing that imbalance came with the publication of I’m So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now, released simultaneously in English and French.
Premiering at Les Rencontres d’Arles, the accompanying exhibition continues to tour internationally. Together, the book and exhibition have been widely recognized for offering a renewed perspective on the history of Japanese photography through the work of women photographers.
Published to coincide with the homecoming exhibition まなざしの奇跡 日本女性写真家の冒険, this volume expands upon that landmark project by introducing the work of thirty women photographers. Spanning themes of memory, the body, everyday life, gender, and beyond, it brings together a wide range of photographic practices that illuminate the richness and diversity of Japanese photography. Rather than presenting a single narrative, these works trace multiple ways of seeing, revealing the many voices that have shaped—and continue to shape—the medium’s history.
The volume includes an interview with Miyako Ishiuchi, alongside contributions by Erika Kobayashi, Moka Kamishiraishi, Erika Yoshida, Rain Kudo, Rei Nagai, and Yasuoki Oshima.
It also features essays by Yuri Yamada on a new generation of women photographers; RongRong & inri on women photographers in contemporary China; Hou Penghui on women photographers in Taiwan; and Yu Geeui on women photographers in South Korea.
