【Artist Profile】
Masaaki Yuasa was born in 1965 in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. After participating in the production of “Chibi Maruko-chan” and other works at Ajiado, he was in charge of animation direction and setting design for “Crayon Shin-chan”. He made his directorial debut with the feature film “Mind Game” in 2004, which won the Grand Prize in the Animation Division of the Japan Media Arts Festival, the Ofuji Noburo Award at the 59th Mainichi Film Awards, and six other awards at the 2005 Fantasia International Film Festival, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. He later directed films such as “Kemonozume”, “Kaiba”, “The Tatami Galaxy” and “Ping Pong THE ANIMATION”. In 2013, he founded Science SARU with Eunyoung Choi. In 2017, he won The Cristal Award, the highest award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival for his film “Lu Over the Wall”. In 2018, he directed the Netflix animated series “DEVILMAN crybaby”, and in 2020, he left Science SARU after directing the television anime “Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!” In 2021, the animated film, “Inu-Oh” was selected for the Orizzonti section of the 78th Venice International Film Festival. After the film’s release in Japan the following year, it was nominated for Best Animated Film at the 80th Golden Globe Awards and Best Independent Feature at the 50th Annie Awards.
